🇺🇬 Uganda’s Former World’s Youngest Monarch, King Oyo, Dies at 34

KAMPALA, Uganda — August 28, 2026: King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom who became known as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34.

His death was announced by the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who said the king died at approximately 10 p.m. local time on Thursday. The cause of death has not been officially disclosed.

King Oyo became ruler of the Tooro Kingdom in 1995, following the death of his father, King Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He was only three years old at the time.

His extraordinary accession attracted international attention, and he was recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. A regency governed the kingdom while he grew up.

At 18, Oyo formally assumed the full responsibilities of the monarchy during a major coronation ceremony in Fort Portal in 2010.

🇺🇬 A cultural symbol for Tooro

Uganda is a republic with an elected government, but the country recognises several traditional kingdoms. Their monarchs have no formal political authority, but they continue to play an important role in preserving culture, heritage and community identity.

The Tooro Kingdom is located in western Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is home to more than two million people.

Reports said King Oyo had been critically ill and was receiving medical treatment in the United States before his death. However, the kingdom has not publicly confirmed the nature of his illness.

🕊️ Crown succession assured

Prime Minister Akiiki described the death as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and people of Tooro.

Although King Oyo was unmarried, the kingdom says he leaves behind a Prince who is his heir. Officials said the identity of the heir will be formally revealed according to Tooro traditions and customs.

King Oyo’s death marks the end of an extraordinary royal journey that began when he inherited a centuries-old throne as a three-year-old child and grew into one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders.
