Have you ever wondered why some trees change from green to yellow, orange, red and brown? The spectacular transformation is actually the result of changes happening inside the leaves.

🌱 Why are leaves green?
Leaves contain a pigment called chlorophyll. It helps plants capture energy from sunlight and use it during photosynthesis to make food.
During seasons with plenty of sunlight, chlorophyll is produced continuously, keeping many leaves green.
🍂 What happens when the seasons change?
As days become shorter and temperatures change, many deciduous trees produce less chlorophyll. As the green pigment breaks down, other pigments that were previously hidden become visible.

🟡 Yellow and orange
Carotenoids are pigments that produce yellow and orange colors. They are present in leaves but are often masked by the much stronger green color of chlorophyll.
🔴 Red and purple
Some trees produce anthocyanins, pigments associated with red and purple colors. Weather conditions can influence how intense these colors become.

🟤 Why do some leaves turn brown?
As leaves age and their chemical processes change, some eventually become brown before falling from the tree. Different tree species also contain different combinations of pigments, which is why they don’t all turn the same color.

The changing color of leaves is a simple example of how biology, chemistry, sunlight and weather interact. What looks like a beautiful natural painting is actually a complex process happening inside millions of tiny plant cells.
