Passenger Treated After Laptop Catches Fire on American Airlines Flight

Dallas, Texas — August 22, 2026

A passenger received medical treatment after a laptop caught fire aboard an American Airlines flight traveling from Atlanta to Dallas, triggering a cabin emergency during the aircraft’s descent.

I American Airlines Flight 2398, carrying 133 people, was approaching Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Friday when smoke was reported from a passenger’s electronic device. The pilot alerted air traffic control, reporting a cabin fire and saying flight attendants were working to contain it.

The pilot initially told controllers that four to five passengers may have suffered burns from the laptop. However, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport later confirmed that one passenger was treated and released after the aircraft landed safely.

Emergency personnel were waiting at the airport when the aircraft arrived. American Airlines praised its crew for responding quickly and containing the device.

The incident has renewed attention on the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries commonly used in laptops and other electronic devices. The Federal Aviation Administration warns that damaged, overheated or improperly handled lithium-ion batteries can experience thermal runaway, potentially producing smoke, fire or intense heat. The cause of the laptop fire has not yet been publicly established.

The incident is another reminder of why passengers are advised to keep an eye on electronic devices and immediately alert cabin crew if a device becomes unusually hot, begins smoking or shows signs of damage.
