A major security operation unfolded at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport after airport staff discovered a drone carrying an explosive device near Ukrainian cargo aircraft, prompting authorities to deploy a bomb disposal robot and temporarily suspend flight operations.
According to Saxony police, the suspicious drone was spotted overnight by an airport employee in a restricted cargo area close to aircraft operated by Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines. Specialists used a remote-controlled explosives disposal robot to safely examine the device before removing its detonator, allowing the immediate threat to be neutralized.
The incident forced the temporary closure of part of the airport, with several flights diverted while emergency teams secured the area. Authorities also confirmed that a separate unidentified object struck a DHL cargo aircraft, which landed safely with only minor damage. Investigators are examining whether the two incidents are connected.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the discovery as a “new level of danger,” warning that the use of an explosive-equipped drone near critical aviation infrastructure represents a significant escalation in security threats. Counterterrorism and anti-extremism prosecutors have taken over the investigation, though officials have not yet identified those responsible.
Leipzig/Halle Airport is a key European cargo hub and serves as a maintenance base for Ukrainian Antonov aircraft, making the incident particularly sensitive amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Authorities have increased security while investigations continue into what is being treated as a potentially deliberate act of sabotage.
