Experts warn of worrying rise in type 2 diabetes among young women in England.

Health experts at Imperial College London have raised concerns over a growing number of women in their 20s in England being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

An analysis of NHS data from 2011 to 2024 found that the increase has accelerated since the Covid-19 pandemic, with rising obesity levels identified as a major contributing factor.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to life-threatening complications, including heart attacks and strokes. According to Diabetes UK, when the disease develops at a younger age, it is often more aggressive, increasing the risk of severe health problems and shortening life expectancy.

The charity stresses the importance of early diagnosis to help prevent long-term damage to vital organs. In some cases, type 2 diabetes can be brought into remission through a healthy diet, weight management, and lifestyle changes, reducing or eliminating the need for glucose-lowering medication.

Researchers also suggest that newer obesity treatments, such as GLP-1 injections and tablets, could play an important role alongside healthier eating habits.

Around 90% of the six million people living with diabetes in the UK have type 2 diabetes rather than type 1. While older adults continue to account for most new diagnoses, NHS England estimates that about 12,000 people under the age of 30 are now living with type 2 diabetes, with young women making up an increasing share of these cases.

Common symptoms include persistent tiredness, frequent urination, and constant thirst.
