13-Year-Old Boy Dies After Fountain Collapse During Spain’s World Cup Celebrations

A 13-year-old boy has died after part of a fountain collapsed during Spain’s World Cup victory celebrations in Salamanca province, northwestern Spain.

Two other young people were injured in the incident, according to emergency services. One child was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

The collapse occurred at around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST) at the Árbol Gordo fountain in Ciudad Rodrigo, where crowds had gathered to celebrate Spain’s triumph. Local reports said part of the fountain gave way after several people climbed onto the structure.

“What was meant to be a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy,” Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall said in a statement on social media.

Emergency services in Castilla y León said they received multiple calls reporting the collapse and quickly deployed local police, the Civil Guard, firefighters, a mobile intensive care unit, and a basic life support ambulance to the scene.
